Managing Your Credit Card for Business Effectively

If you plan to use a small business credit card to cover for your company’s expenses and to build business credit, here are the steps on how to manage your account effectively:

Don’t Mix and Match!

Be sure that you do not use your small business credit card for personal purchases, no matter how small these purchases are.  One of the benefits of using a business credit card is to be able to avoid mixing your business and personal finances. But if you’re going to charge personal buys to your business credit card, even occasionally, you could lose track of your spending which can endanger your business.

Limit Your Accounts

Do not open multiple accounts at once. One or two business credit cards should be enough to provide the financial support you need and to help you build business credit history as well. Managing too many business credit cards can become confusing. It may also encourage spending more than what your budget permits.

Take Advantage of the Grace Period

Some business credit cards offer up to 21 days of grace period while other cards may provide less time. Look for a credit card for business that provides a sufficient length of grace period. This way, you can have more time to pay off your charges without incurring interest rate.

Pay Through the Internet

Save yourself from hassle and extra fees by paying off your credit card charges through the internet. You can also set up automatic payment with your bank to ensure that you will not miss a single due date of payment.

Say No to Cash Advances

Many business credit cards offer the option to take out cash advances and pay at a later time. However, business owners are advised not to use this feature. Why so? Because cash advance transactions are not covered by the grace period and usually have higher interest rates than the rate applicable to purchases or balance transfers.

Don’t Be Late

Just as prompt payment is important when you own a personal credit card, the same rule applies for business credit cardholders. If you want to build a good business credit history, you need to use your business credit card regularly and submit your payments on time.
