If you run a small business, then you know the importance of having credible referrals. Getting business referrals can seem difficult if you are not sure of how to do it. Not having referrals can make your potential customers doubt your business. It can make them wonder whether the products and services you are offering are good enough. Sure, you can go around asking for referrals. However, there is a right way to ask for referrals and a wrong way.  You don’t want to come off as needy.

However, do not bribe your customers to get referrals.  It is wrong. Also, it can affect the credibility of your business.

Give Your New Customers extra benefits

When you reward your new customer, they will, in turn, appreciate the person who referred them to you.  It doesn’t have to be a discount off the price or anything like that.  Everyone loves free shipping and handling.  Or they get expedited shipping without paying the extra cost.  If it’s a digital product, you can offer them a FREE PDF that will help make what your selling easier to use.    When you reward your new customers, it will win over your referrals. It will make them feel valued. In return, they will refer you to more people because you bring value to them as well.

Do something big

A lot of the times when you ask a customer to refer you, they will probably forget it. You cannot blame them though. They are probably trying to work around tight schedules. However, do something big and you will have their attention. If your customers have a great experience when doing business with you, they will talk about it with their friends, family and on their social media! Doing something memorable or exciting will inspire your customers to spread the word about your business. You can achieve this in infinite ways. You just have to be creative.

Many people will shop at a certain store, or fly a certain airline because of the loyalty program.   I am guilty of this myself!  I’ve flown United Airlines almost exclusively for the past 10 years because I liked their loyalty program.  Their service was basically the same as the others and it was sometimes more expensive.  But they had me hooked on the free upgrades.

Create a loyalty program that will “hook” your clients.  Reward them for not just using your services but for referring people.  Give points to people who share their experiences on social media.  Offer free upgrades.  Go above and beyond for people who are loyal to your brand!

Send your clients holiday cards

Sending cards on important events like birthdays, or the first order they placed will make you stand out.  It will make the clients feel like they are important to you and it will go far in building a lasting relationship.

Have you ever thought of sending them an anniversary card or gift?   I belong to a self help program that sends gifts out on our birthdays.  Not just little cards, but usually a small box of goodies w/ cookies, Starbucks card and an engraved pen.  In total it might have cost them $30 with shipping and handling.  But it has always made me feel like a valued client.  They will also, out of the blue, send us a book we should read.  That wasn’t part of the membership when I signed up, but I sure do appreciate it, and them!
