You must recognize the difference between what your child needs and what they want for school. It’s important to explain to your child that while they want new things for this school year, they must also make use of their old things, especially when these things are still in good condition.

To ensure that you will only buy items that are needed, you must create a list in advance so you can take a look at each item more closely. It’s a good idea to create your shopping list with your kids so they can understand the value of preparation and budgeting.

Many merchants offer back-to-school coupons that you should take advantage of. You can find discount coupons from magazine, newspapers and online coupon sites. Pick out coupons that match the items in your shopping list to make sure that you’re not buying something just because it’s on sale.
Shop online.
Many online merchants offer great deals for consumers who shop through the internet. You might even be able to enjoy free shipping especially if you’re going to make a large purchase. Aside from that, you can save yourself from the trouble of falling in line at the counter and since you will be doing your shopping from home, you can save a few extra bucks on gas. Just remember to buy online from a legitimate and reputable online store. Don’t forget to read the merchant’s Return Policy and Privacy Policy.
Buy in bulk.
Think about the supplies that your kids will use the most during the school year and buy in bulk. This is a simple way to save money. You may also ask your friends, neighbors and relatives if they need certain items. You buy them in bulk and split the cost and the items.
Curb your impulse spending.
How many times do you get to the checkout and all the kids grab a bar of candy? A growing tend in shopping centers doesn’t just have the small version of the candy there, but often times its all King sized. Those king sized candies are usually almost $2 a piece! You can buy a bag for what you will pay for 2. Since they aren’t necessary and they are bad for our kids. Just skip it. Ignore all the stuff at the checkout. They are designed to trigger an impulse buy.
Watch your credit card limit.
If you’re going to use your credit card to purchase school supplies, see to it that you will not be maxing them out. Keep in mind that if you max out your credit, your credit score can drop and if you exceed, you will be paying the over-the-limit penalty.
