How to Start a Successful Janitorial Service Business

You may be looking for a new outlet for your next big business endeavor — have you ever thought about starting a janitorial cleaning company?  With a surprisingly low start up and a recession-proof business plan, janitors are always in demand and you can find that starting a company like this can be a great path to success.  With a janitorial cleaning business, you have plenty of outlets for your services — from residential cleaning to commercial in offices, hospitals, restaurants, schools, government buildings and more, you have plenty of options to get the ball rolling.

First, you will have to come up with a name of your company.  Try to pick a name that stands out and beats the competition.  You will want to work on the backbone of your business first, how it will run, how you will hire and pay employees, how you will manage clients and, of course, plenty of contracts for employees and clients.  You will want to start a website and obtain a phone number for your business – and make sure it is promoted all over the web, the yellow pages, and in print ads.  All of these things should be considered so you can find new clients – and be sure to offer all your services, rates and other information on the website in detail.

The Difficult Part

During this process, you are going to want to start looking into the more difficult standards of starting your cleaning business.  You are going to have to create an EIN number with the IRS, your business social security number.  This can be done easily on their website or by calling them.  After this, you may have to file that number with your local city and state for tax purposes.  Once you are “legally” running your business, you can then apply for insurance, which is a very good idea with a janitorial company.  In fact, many commercial clients will not hire you without it.  Shop around and make sure to fine the best insurance that suits your needs – you may need insurance for your employees if they drive from client to client all the way to if they get hurt on the job.  You may want to look into bonding as well.

Supplies

Lastly, make sure you have all the supplies that you need for the job.  Work with wholesalers for the best prices on bulk cleaning products.  If employees are using company cars, do you need to purchase those for your fleet or get branding logos on their cars?  Do you need uniforms?  If you’re using paper contracts, do you have enough printed and ready to go?  There are plenty of items to consider purchasing for your cleaning company, but make sure to be smart and conscious of your spending habits.

Goal

With your janitor business, once you establish regular clients, you will be making constant business – as you will be scheduled regularly.  The goal will be to find new regulars that will keep your staff at work.  With proper insurance and plenty of supplies, your business will be guaranteed to be successful.  Don’t forget to come up with plenty of procedures and protocol to make sure both employees and clients are satisfied.  The path to success is paved (and so shiny and clean) for your future cleaning business!

  1. Thanks for sharing. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to start my own business, and this applies for most businesses as well. I’m not sure if starting my own janitor business would be the route I’d go, but if I have to I will gladly look into it further.

  2. Welcome David! Starting a business is both challenging and risky but it is very rewarding and fulfilling too.

  3. This is a very thought out article and a good one. I must say this is a good way to go about starting most businesses. With a janitorial service/business, it’s best to have a goal and name set forward. What kind of work will you provide and so on. The same goes for whatever business you start. What will your name be? What kind of services will you offer? Etc. Great article! 🙂
