Some people think that bad credit credit cards are only for those who suffer from a really low credit score or who have been through a bankruptcy. However, it’s not just for those who badly need credit rehabilitation. How do you know if you need to apply for a bad credit credit card?
If you find yourself in any of the following situations, then consider getting a credit card for bad credit. Anyone who wants to work on improving his/her credit history can use this type of card as tool for credit improvement.
Do you have a low credit score?
If your FICO score is below 700 points, then you should start working on your credit score right away. There’s no need to wait until your FICO score reaches 600 before taking action. The sooner you can lift your credit score, the better it would be for you.
Get a copy of your credit report from the three major credit bureaus and find out the factors that may have caused your poor rating. Understanding the reasons behind your low score can help you plan out a solution.
Have you been frequently late in submitting your payments? Are you prone to exceeding your credit limit? Yes, a bad credit credit card can be a great tool in building good credit but only if you use it correctly. That means staying within your credit limit and submitting your payments on time.
Do you have negative remarks in your public record?
If you have just been discharged from bankruptcy, then you can expect that most creditors would refuse to extend you credit. However, being discharged from all your debts through bankruptcy also means that all past credit history that you built in the past have been erased. The only way you rebuild credit is to open new accounts in your name.
You can start by getting a department store card or a gas station card since these accounts do not involve credit check. Acquiring a secured credit card is also an option. Remember to use your bad credit credit card with care because that will be your stepping stone towards good credit.
Do you need to apply for new credit?
Do you want to apply for a reward credit card or a personal loan? If yes, then make sure that your application will not be rejected because of bad credit. Get a copy of your credit report at least six months before submitting your credit card application or loan application. If your credit score needs improvement, then a secured credit card can help you.
A secured card or a bad credit card is a great tool for improving credit score as long as you can keep up with your payments. Furthermore, choose a secured credit card that will report your payments to the major credit bureaus. After 6 months or so, check your credit report and see if you are now eligible to get a reward credit card or a loan.
